Definition of Acquired Antibiotic Resistance

Due to the lack of novel antibiotics, the resistance shown by the bacteria towards the antibiotics has become a serious public health concern in the world these days. This resistance has also established due to the existence of multi-drug resistance in bacteria. These resistant bacteria can be transferred between the species either through the direct contact or by the aid of the food chain.

The acquired antibiotic resistance is one of the evolutionary phenomena in which the microorganisms remain unaffected by the action of the antibiotics. This resistance is developed might be due to the change in the target of the drug by mutations or by the transfer of the resistance genes to the progeny.

The resistance is acquired by some mechanisms such as by the inactivation of the enzymes, by the reduced intracellular accumulation or when the target sites in the cells get modified.
