Definition of Adenine

Adenine is an organic compound which is heterocyclic in nature. It is one of the nitrogenous bases and belongs to the family of purines. The purines are composed of two aromatic rings. Adenine is found in both DNA and RNA.

As we know that there are two strands in the molecule of a DNA, the adenine which is located on one strand form hydrogen bonding with the thymine bases located on the opposite strand. Such bonding between the base pairs leads to the stability of the DNA molecule.

The adenosine triphosphate is one of the forms of adenine and it is a molecule that serves the role of storing energy. It is also known as the energy currency of the cell.
