Definition of Anagenesis

Anagenesis is a phenomenon by which the evolution of species takes place. The species are gradually evolved and they keep on existing as interbreeding species. The anagenesis persists within the same lineage of organisms and it is different from cladogenesis in the regard that there occurs splitting which leads to separate species. The formation of new species from the ancestral species is not always the possibility in the case of anagenesis.

Example of Anagenesis:

Over the course of about 2 million years, the size of the cranium part of the human brain has been doubled in size and the toe of the horse has been reduced from 4 to only 1.
