Definition of Auxotroph

Auxotroph is such an organism which does not have an ability to give rise to a certain organic compound that is required for the normal growth and development of it. This characteristic is termed as auxotrophy and it is a Greek word which means to increase nourishment.

This term is contrary to the word phototrophy in which the organisms exhibit the characteristic of forming all those compounds (amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates etc.) which are required for their growth. They are self-sufficient in their metabolites but the auxotrophs need a medium which contains that metabolite which is deficient in them.
