Definition of Centimorgan

The genetic linkage is being measured by a unit which is termed as centimorgan. It is defined as a one percent chance with which the two consecutive markers present on the chromosome will be segregated from each other during the phenomenon of crossing over in the same generation. In other words, we can say that one percent of recombination is equal to one centimorgan.

A genetic recombination is a tool that brings about diversity in the populations. The unit is named after Thomas Hunt Morgan who was an American geneticist. The centimorgan is responsible for translating about 1 million bp of DNA into the human genome.
