Definition of Chain Reaction

A chain reaction is a set of reactions in which the by-products tend to react and cause additional reactions to occur. In the case of positive feedback, the self-amplifying events in the form of a chain take place.

The systems which are not in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium, chain reactions facilitate them to release energy so that they attain a state of higher entropy. The chain reactions are depicted in the form of a mathematical model which is based on Markov chains.

Example of Chain Reaction:

The nuclear reactions occur in the form of chain reaction. The neutrons tend to initiate nuclear fission reactions. The neutron produced in the previous reaction initiates the next series of reactions.
