Definition of Contingent Worker

Contingent workers are not the permanent employees of the company. They worked as a freelancer, contractors, consultants, or project-based contract worker. They work from their place or directly on the site. They are not entitled to any benefits just like a contract or permanent employee.

These workers complete their tasks under the Statement of Work (SOW) provision. As soon as the project is finished, they left the company and they may be called back when another project gets started and they are required as freelance workers. As they are not permanent workers, organizations are not liable to provide continuous work for a longer period.
