Definition of Corrosion

Corrosion is a natural phenomenon that is responsible for transforming the refined form of metal into a more stable form. The metal oxides, hydroxides, and sulfides are the stable forms of metal. In corrosion, the metal is usually destroyed in a very gradual way when it reacts with the environment.

The useful properties like the strength and appearance of the metals are gradually degraded due to corrosion. There is a new field introduced that helps in controlling and preventing the occurrence of corrosion, this is known as corrosion engineering.

Example of Corrosion:

A very prominent example of corrosion is rusting which happens due to the formation of iron oxides. Ceramics and polymers are also subjected to the damage caused by corrosion.
