Definition of Cross Functional Team

A cross-functional team is a group of people who belong to different departments with different work expertise, but are all working on a common goal of the company. It may include people from marketing, finance, human resource, IT, or operations departments. Usually, this team involves people from all levels of the company, though it can involve people from outside the organization to participate such as vendors, key customers, or consultants.

These teams are often self-directed working on a specific task that demands the expertise of multiple departments. These teams help an organization to think out of the box and find solutions to the complex problem due to collective knowledge sharing from each department. This creative approach gives a competitive advantage to the company over its competitors with innovative ideas and solutions.
