Definition of Forward Genetics

Forward genetics is the technique used in the field of molecular genetics in which the effect a mutant gene is producing on the phenotype is recognized first and afterwards the mutant gene is isolated and identified. The method starts by identifying a phenotype and then the model organisms are found or created that is responsible for exhibiting the characteristics that are being studied.

In the beginning, it was done by using those mutations that occur naturally or by employing mutagens to induce the mutations or by the process of insertional mutagenesis. The breeding was allowed and then the individuals carrying the mutation were isolated and the gene that was responsible for it was mapped. The inheritable diseases are studied by this technique of forwarding genetics.
