Definition of Genetically Modified Organisms

Genetically modified organisms are living organisms who have their genetic material being artificially manipulated in a laboratory. The manipulation of the genetic material is done by the techniques of genetic engineering (recombinant DNA technology).

As a result of it, several varieties of plants, animals as well as microorganisms are created that were not present naturally or through the traditional methods of cross-breeding. Genetically modified organisms can show resistance and tolerance towards the effects of herbicides and insecticides. GMOs provide several benefits to society yet many health-associated risks are also reported due to such organisms.
