Definition of Housekeeping Gene

Housekeeping gene is a gene that is responsible for encoding such a protein that is required in almost all the cells of a multicellular organism. These genes are known to be the constitutive genes that are pivotal for the maintenance of the cellular functions. These functions of the cells are necessary for the cell to exist.

These genes are thought to be expressed in all the cells of an organism and do not depend upon the developmental stage, cell cycle stage, external signal or the type of tissue. These genes are also used in experimental studies as internal controls.
