Definition of Joule

According to System International, the joule is the unit of energy and its symbol is J. It is a derived unit and is defined as the amount of energy that is transferred to an object when 1N force acts on that object and compels the object to move a distance of 1m. This unit is named after a physicist James Joule.

Joule can also be stated as the work that is being done in order to move an electric charge of 1C through the potential difference of 1V. Through this relationship, the unit of voltage i.e., volt can also be defined.
