Definition of Parapatric Speciation

Parapatric speciation is one of the types of speciation and it occurs when the subpopulations belonging to the same species get isolated from one another. The populations are mostly isolated but they overlap with each other in a narrow range. Parapatric speciation takes place either due to the unsymmetric distribution of the members of the subpopulations or due to the existence of the partial geographic barriers.

Only those subpopulations are allowed to interbreed which exist next to each other. Since the subpopulations which are present at the extreme ends comprise those members which are different from one another and hence they are not able to interbreed.
