Definition of Primary Production

The green plants have some autotrophic bacteria present in the environment that can convert the inorganic matter into biomass by the utilization of solar energy as well as chemical energy. These organisms are present in the first link of the food chain and hence are known to be the primary producers.

The energy that is fixed by these organisms is afterwards used by all other organisms. The process in which the inorganic carbon and other nutrients are assimilated and fixed into the form of organic matter by the action of autotrophic organisms is known to be the primary production.
