Definition of Prometaphase

Prometaphase is the 2nd phase of mitosis in which the genetic material that is being duplicated gets separated and is divided equally among two identical daughter cells. The processes that occur during prometaphase are that the nuclear envelope which encloses the nucleus is broken down.

Consequently, the sister chromatids are released and this step is necessary for the separation of the genetic material among the daughter cells. Moreover, the kinetochore which is a protein in nature is formed around the centromere. The kinetochore microtubules originate from either side of the cell and get attached to the kinetochore.
