Definition of Subject Matter Jurisdiction



Subject matter jurisdiction is the power of the court to preside over certain and specific cases. Subject matter jurisdiction means that if the case will be of a civil matter, the case jurisdiction will be produced in a civil lawsuit. Whereas, if it seems to be a murder case i.e. criminal matter, then it will appear after the jurisdiction of a criminal lawsuit.

 


Criminal cases have the jurisdiction of only criminal cases, not family cases. Therefore it will have the jurisdiction of the criminal proceedings of the court. It is the adjudicating power of the court that which jurisdiction the cases and the parties are in dispute.

 


There are two types of jurisdictions i.e. Personal Jurisdiction and the other is Subject Matter Jurisdiction.
