Definition of Sympatric Speciation

The speciation is a phenomenon in which the various species are formed as a result of the evolution of populations and it is a very gradual process. About four different types of speciation are known, one of which is known as sympatric speciation. It is quite distinct from the other forms as the species that emerge from these populations exist in very overlapping areas and regions.

It is an uncommon form of speciation and the information regarding its occurrence is still unknown. It is thought that this is more prominent in the case of unicellular prokaryotes which have an ability to transfer genes to one another in a relatively convenient manner.
