Definition of Torpor

Torpor is the state in which there is a decreased physical activity exhibited by an animal. The downfall in physiological activity is due to the low body temperature and reduced rate of metabolism. On the other hand, torpor helps the animals to survive in such a condition when there is a decreased supply of food.

Some animals undergo the phenomenon of torpor on daily basis such as birds like the hummingbird and several mammals like mice, bats, etc. These animals remain active during the day as they have normal body temperature and metabolic rate but their body temperature and metabolic rate are reduced during the night and in this way, the energy is conserved.
