Definition of Transcription Factors

A transcription factor is such a protein which binds to a particular sequence of DNA and controls the rate of transcription of the genetic material. These proteins are also known as sequence-specific DNA binding factors. The transcription factors tend to play role in the regulation of the genes from the beginning so that they show their expression in the right cell at the specific time and in specific amounts.

The transcription factors play role in a very coordinated manner and they also control the division, migration and growth of cells during the development of embryos. The human genome is composed of approximately 1600 transcription factors. These proteins either work alone or in a form of a complex by activating and repressing the RNA polymerase.
