Definition of Cohesin

Cohesin is a complex that is formed by protein molecules and they help in the uniting the sister chromatids, in forming the homologous recombination and in DNA looping. The cohesin protein holds the sister chromatids together after the DNA is being replicated and keep them together till the anaphase where the sister chromatids are separated by the removal of cohesin.

This protein complex gives rise to a structure which resembles a ring and it is postulated that the sister chromatids are trapped inside it. Cohesin also helps in the attachment of the spindle fibers to the chromosomes. It facilitates the repair of DNA by the phenomenon of recombination.
