Definition of Copy Number Variation

Copy number variation is such a phenomenon in which the number of copies of genes varies from individual to individual. It is a kind of structural variation in which a stretch of DNA might be duplicated, triplicated or quadruplicated. When the Human Genome Project was completed, it was revealed that the genome goes through certain gains as well as losses of genetic material.

This has not been resolved yet that to what extent the copy number variation contributes to the development of the diseases in humans. But it has been known that there are certain types of cancer which are associated when there is an increase in the copy numbers of particular genes.
