Definition of Molecular Genetics

Molecular genetics is a branch of biology which deals with the study of the structure as well as the function of genetic material at the molecule level. It also addresses the expression of the DNA molecules and how the organisms have so many variations in them. The genetic screens are used to determine the structure and function of the genes in the genome of an organism.

A number of other fields such as cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology forms the basis of molecular genetics. When the researchers are searching for the mutation (changes in DNA) in a gene and link this mutation to a specific phenotype, then molecular genetics become a very strong tool in determining the treatment for diseases.
