Definition of Nonsense Mutation

Nonsense mutation is also termed as stop mutation and it is characterized by that change in the sequence of DNA that results in the termination of a protein. It may also cause the translation of the proteins to cease much earlier than expected. This is one of the highly occurring mutations in human beings and it leads to the expression of those proteins which are non-functional. The effect of the nonsense mutation is dependent upon the location of the stop codon in the coding DNA.

Example of Nonsense Mutation:

Some genetic disabilities like cystic fibrosis, thalassemia etc. are developed due to these nonsense mutations.
