Definition of Stratified Sampling

A sampling technique where the researcher divides the population into small groups called strata based on the similar characteristics from the population data. The final sample is then randomly selected from the sub-groups of each stratum. The number from each strata is according to the proportion of the population size.

Stratified sampling is different from simple random sampling which is used when very little information is available about the population. The strata are developed on the basis of gender, age, income, family members, or education level.  The data in each stratum should not overlap each other.
